Through the Rural Development Administration (RDA), the Republic of Korea (commonly called South Korea) has been collaborating with IRRI since the 1960s to breed the temperate Japonica rice variety with the tropically grown indica variety. This produced the rice variety Tongil, which transformed Korea from a rice importer to a self-sufficient producer.

SEOUL, South Korea—27 October. The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and IRRI signed a memorandum of understanding to fight poverty and hunger in developing countries through rice science and modern agricultural technologies.

Mayor of Cheongdo County in South Korea visits the “birthplace” of Tong-il rice

Seong-Yool Lee, mayor of Cheongdo County, South Korea, visited IRRI on 11 November 2015 to learn about the historical relationship between Korea and the Institute. The Government of the Republic of Korea has been working with IRRI since 1964. IRRI TC and ITCC RDA conducted 12th RTTS Training
